REAL QUESTIONS: As a Christian (who does NOT support Trump), how can you vote when both parties are becoming more extreme? Example, Bernie Sanders (who, at one time, I thought of voting for) has been inviting Laura Jane Grace to sing profane songs that are clearly “anti-Christian” (and, yes, I understand it is a response expressing frustration for being attacked by Christian-extremists). Then, there are candidates that are supported by President Trump that embrace racist legislation, extremism, and white nationalists.
REAL ADVICE:
What should a Christian do when both sides go against everything a follower of Christ believes?

That’s a tough and deeply personal question, and it’s one that many Christians struggle with when it comes to politics. When both major political parties seem to embrace extremes that conflict with Christian values, it can feel like there’s no good option. However, here are some things to consider:
1. Prioritize Biblical Values Over Party Loyalty
Rather than aligning yourself with a political party, align yourself with biblical principles. No candidate or party will ever be perfectly in line with Christianity, but you can prayerfully consider which policies best reflect God’s justice, mercy, and truth.
2. Look Beyond the Extremes
The loudest voices in politics are often the most extreme. But there are still reasonable candidates who try to uphold integrity and serve the common good. Research each candidate beyond the headlines and social media narratives to understand their actual positions and character.
3. Consider Third-Party or Independent Candidates
If neither major party represents biblical values well, consider alternative candidates. While third-party or independent candidates rarely win, voting for them sends a message that you refuse to support moral compromise.
4. Focus on Local and State Elections
Presidential elections get the most attention, but local and state leaders often have more direct influence on laws and policies that affect your community. These elections can provide more opportunities to support godly leadership.
5. Vote for Policies, Not Just Personalities
While the character of a leader matters, it’s also important to consider what policies they support. Which candidate’s policies will promote justice, protect the vulnerable, and uphold moral values?
6. Engage Beyond Voting
Politics is only one way to influence society. If no candidate fully represents Christ’s teachings, Christians can still engage in advocacy, ministry, and community work to promote godly values outside the political system.
7. Pray for Wisdom
James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given to him.” Pray for discernment and trust that God is in control, even when political options seem discouraging.
Ultimately, the goal is to be faithful to Christ above all else. That might mean making a hard choice, but God calls us to seek justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him (Micah 6:8), even in how we engage with politics.
