The signs of an authoritarian or fascist regime can be subtle at first. However, as the government tightens its grip, there are some undeniable signals that might make you think, “Hey, this seems a little off.” Here’s your guide to recognizing the signs that your country might be slipping into a regime where dissent is not just discouraged—it’s downright dangerous.

- Everyone Is Talking About How Great The Leader Is—All the Time
Suddenly, the leader of your country is the best thing to ever happen to humanity. Forget about pesky things like facts or logic, it’s now about praise. Statues? Check. Paintings? Check. A 24/7 news cycle devoted to their accomplishments? Check. It’s almost like they’re a modern-day deity, but, you know, with fewer miracles and more “executive orders.” - “Free Speech” Becomes Synonymous With “Speech We Like”
The government starts passing laws about what can and can’t be said. Sure, they’ll let you talk, but only if you’re saying nice things about them or agreeing with whatever version of truth they’re currently selling. Protests? Illegal. Opinions that stray from the script? Treason. - Judges Are Replaced by People Who Just Really Like the Leader
The judiciary is now packed with individuals who—by some miracle—just so happen to share the leader’s exact views. The rule of law becomes more of a suggestion, really. You know, just like a traffic light that’s conveniently always green when the leader drives by. - The Media Is Suddenly All The Same, But with Different Fonts
The press might still exist, but it’s been “consolidated” into just a few friendly outlets that completely agree with everything the government says. Any dissenting voices are either silenced or sent on an extended “vacation” to a remote location. - Laws Are Passed, But Nobody Ever Reads Them—Not Even The People Passing Them
It turns out, reading the entire 1,200-page bill would take too much time. So, instead, lawmakers just go ahead and approve anything with “National Security” in the title. Trust that no one in power ever actually bothers to read these things, but they’re fine because who needs due process when you’re doing (beware of these terms & phrases): God’s work; this for the good of the nation; all of this to ensure the sanctity of Universal Science; for those with deficiencies, as it is our duty because we were born with good genes; a sacred mission; the important work of eugenics? - Citizens Are Suddenly Being Told What to Do with Their Bodies… Again
If there was a slight dip in the ability to make decisions about your own personal life, health, or safety, get ready for that to turn into full-blown policy. But don’t worry! The government has your best interests at heart, especially when it comes to deciding what you can and can’t do with your own body and decisions regarding your personal health. - Military Parades Are Now a Weekly Occurrence
Military parades are meant to be celebratory, right? Well, now they’re scheduled like weekly family barbecues. It’s more about showing off how strong and disciplined the country is than celebrating any real achievements. Prepare yourself for an entire season of “Marching for the Leader.” - Protests Are Disbanded, But The “Spontaneous Gatherings” Are More Frequent
What’s better than an organized protest? A spontaneous gathering of millions, of course. Your country is now full of these “impromptu” rallies where everyone seems to be cheering, clapping, and chanting for the government’s goals. Funny how all these protests seem to just “happen” at the same time, isn’t it? - People You Don’t Like Are Being Disappeared, But It’s Fine, Really
It’s always sad to see a prominent opposition leader “disappear.” But hey, they were probably up to no good, right? In fact, many people who disagree with the government suddenly go on vacation… to a location they’ll never return from. But that’s just a coincidence, of course. - You’re Not Sure If You’re Living in a Country or a Really Unsettling Reality TV Show
Finally, it’s become increasingly difficult to tell if you’re actually in a country or part of a strange game show where the rules keep changing on the fly. Just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, it does—dramatically, with a television broadcast by the leader reminding you of how lucky you are to live under their regime.
So, if you’ve checked off several of these boxes, you might be in the middle of a transition to something… interesting. Don’t worry! Keep your head down, avoid the wrong social media posts, and you’ll probably be fine. Probably.
