During the 2025 Presidential Address to the Joint Session of Congress, a powerful moment occurred when 77-year-old Democratic Representative Al Green of Texas stood up against what he perceived as an immoral and harmful policy being pushed by President Donald Trump. The event was marked by the tension of a divided Congress, with President Trump delivering a speech that reflected his protectionist and hardline stance on immigration, tariffs, and Medicaid cuts (among a long, rambling, hyperbolized list of other things).
Green, a seasoned lawmaker known for his vocal opposition to injustice, had been quietly stewing in frustration as Trump spoke about further reducing Medicaid funding. As the President detailed these proposed cuts, which many Democrats felt would hurt the most vulnerable Americans, Trump began boasting about having a “mandate” that gave him ultimate authority to tear it all apart as he sees fit, Green could not remain silent.
In an act of defiance, he stood up, raised his hand, and interrupted the President’s speech. “This is wrong! This is evil! You have no mandate to cut Medicaid” he shouted, his voice carrying across the chamber. His protest was a bold condemnation of Trump’s proposals to slash essential social safety nets like Medicaid and Medicare.
Green’s actions immediately sparked a wave of reactions. Yet, the old man stood alone with cane in hand. Democrats in the chamber remained seated in quiet protest, holding signs reading “false” to counter some of Trump’s claims. On the other side, Republicans jeered and began chanting with vicious venom vomiting from their throats: “U.S.A.! U.S.A.!” Yet, this 77 year old man remained standing alone against a red giant of hate. Daggers swung in the mouths of his opposition, thumping the words, “Sit down!”
The cacophony of animalistic tones crescendoed and a continued storm of chanting swirled, as gestures and gnashing of teeth could be seen and heard. Security quickly moved to escort Green out of the chamber for his disruption.
As Green was escorted away, the moment was captured on live television, highlighting the deep partisan divides in the room. His protest, while brief, carried significant symbolic weight, as it was an expression of deep moral outrage against policies that Green believed would harm the most vulnerable in society.
His protest should become a rallying cry for those with decency, as well as a moment that reminds the nation of the power of standing up for the downtrodden and vulnerable, no matter the cost.
Unfortunately, he was left standing alone. His voice drowned out. Many in the liberal media used words like “heckled” or “rogue” or “thorn in the side of Democrats.” The far-right media and GOP denounced his actions, calling for punishment.

While the speech continued and the President pushed forward with his policy agenda, Green’s bold act of defiance should be a moment of clarity in a deeply polarized moment in American politics. It should serve as a reminder that sometimes, even in the face of great opposition, standing up for what is right can resonate far beyond the halls of Congress.
